About Us

Unique among local swim teams, the Bergen Barracudas is a
parent-run not-for-profit organization.  We are self-supported through membership dues and fund-raising revenues.  We run our program under the rules of the New Jersey chapter of the United States Swimming Association.  Parent participation in team-sponsored events is highly encouraged.  Our organization was chartered in 1980 for the sole purpose of running the Bergen Barracudas Swim Team.  The leadership of the organization is comprised of parents volunteering on our Parent Board.

The Bergen Barracudas Swim Team has been at Ramapo College’s 6-lane 25-yard pool in Mahwah since our formation over 28 years ago.  Ramapo College is conveniently located on Rt. 202 in Mahwah — it is within 15 minutes of many neighborhoods in Bergen, Passaic and Rockland Counties.

Our kids swim competitively in open, invitational NJS/USS meets at the pools around New Jersey, including college facilities at Rutgers, Seton Hall and Princeton.  The swimmers can compete as often or as little as their situation permits.

  • Group 1:  This is our senior group; our most dedicated swimmers.  They practice 6 days per week, including some morning workouts.  Training is intense with emphasis on the physiological characteristics of power, speed and endurance to achieve an individual’s maximum potential.

  • Group 2: Our swimmers begin to train with more intensity while reinforcing swimming fundamentals.  Swimmers continue to practice setting goals and are challenged to enhance stroke skills.

  • Group 3: This group enables more ambitious swimmers make the transition toward senior training while providing stable training for those who cannot train in the senior programs.  Goal setting and stroke techniques are emphasized here.

  • Group 4: These swimmers have their first contact with competitive swim training.  Coaches introduce goal setting, stress stroke techniques fun drills to enhance a swimmers confidence.

  • Group 5: Fun-filled training geared to develop enjoyment of the sport while providing basics of stroke techniques and physical conditioning.
